well, i should be going to bed early with the headache being worse than ever today, but i got distracted. i was watching some weird sigur rós video with down syndrome angels making out, and it was just freaking me out for some reason. probably because dr. de leon’s headache remedy has me not completely sober.
when i left his apartment this afternoon, firmly situated in a little mexico by highland mall, i saw a fat chihuahua on the landing by the stairs. when i was far enough down the stairs to be on the dog’s eye level, i stuck my finger out to his nose to sniff. right when i heard someone say, "he might bite," the dog barked and tried to bite my finger.
i pulled my finger back and laughed, and heard a concerned woman asking, "did he bite you?" i looked down to the landing below me to see an old, shriveled woman with leather skin, puffing on a cigarette, asking again, "did he bite you?"
i continued down the stairs and answered, "no, not at all, i’m great."
"did it hurt when you did that? [pulls on her lip]"
"yeah, it did. it hurt for about a week and a half."
"[pointing to the too-large earring in her nostril] this sure did hurt."
"my nose didn’t hurt. it just freaked me out to hear it tear through there."
"[laughing] oh yeah, to hear it go through the gristle?!"
"ha, yeah, gristle…"
"my friend and i did this, just stuck an earring through there. [tugs the ring in her nose]"
"ah! oh, really? wow…"
"i like your little one, though. it’s cute."
this lady seems a little nuts to me, but how can you fault crazy old leatherskin ladies with homemade nose piercings, sitting on some stairs in a lite version of a hood? i laughed, thinking of how nana said my nose ring was cute when she first saw it, and thanked her as i walked away. she wished me a good night. thankfully no one had stripped my car while i was at chris’s. >.< (ha, i’m a snob.)
though the picture’s completely unrelated, i’m grateful for the old characters in the world. i tend not to enjoy people my own age half as much as those older than me, so this lady was just what my shitty headache-infested day needed. and lack of sobriety.
